The Institute for Asian Studies offers resources to support students and faculty in pursuing educational, scholarship, and research opportunities through Portland State University, providing information on relevant organizations in Portland and across various regions of Asia.

PSU Korean Outreach, Research, and Education (KORE) 

The PSU Korean Outreach, Research, and Education (KORE) Initiative is a newly launched program at Portland State University dedicated to advancing Korean Studies on our campus. This initiative is made possible through the generous support of Peter and Helen Chun, whose commitment underscores the importance of strengthening Korean Studies at PSU. We are now delighted to invite applications for the KORE Undergraduate Fellowship Program and proposals from PSU faculty members for Korean Studies course development.

The Institute for Asian Studies Scholarship

The Institute for Asian Studies Student Scholarship is a competitive award of up to $1000 for one or two qualified, full-time, degree seeking, PSU students, who are pursuing an academic program at Portland State, or abroad, with a focus on Asia and/or Asian language studies.

Study Abroad Program

The PSU Education Abroad Office coordinates a variety of study abroad and international internship opportunities in Asia. Study abroad programs are listed in the link to search for specific areas within the Asian continent.

IE3 Global Internships

Gain professional and intercultural experience through international internships, while earning academic credit towards your degree. IE3 Global Internships provides international internship opportunities in several Asian countries. To be eligible applicants must be junior, senior, or Masters level students in good academic standing and currently enrolled at PSU.  

Faculty Invitation for 2026 CNU International Summer School (CNUISS).

Since 2009, the CNU International Summer School has brought together students from Chonnam National University and partner universities around the world for a meaningful academic and cultural exchange.

The 4‑week program, led by distinguished professors from CNU and other leading universities, allows students to earn up to 6 credits while forming genuine friendships across cultures. Korean and international participants learn, travel, and explore Gwangju and other regions of Korea together, gaining a deeper understanding of the country’s authentic culture and building lifelong global networks.

2025 KNU Online Winter Program.

The KNU short term Korean language program is two weeks in person program, designed for students who are highly interested in experiencing Korea in person. This program issues a Certificate of Completion (not an academic transcript). 

Boren Writing Workshop

Are considering applying for a Boren Award, join the hands-on writing workshop focused on developing strong, competitive application essays. This workshop will look closely at how to clearly articulate one's goals, language choice, and long-term service commitment. Leaving with concrete strategies and a stronger sense of direction for your essay drafts. This session is useful for students at any stage of the writing process!
